Pontiac started designating the GTA as a model designation in the 1987 model year. The GTA model was produced from 1987 until 1992. The motor options available were the 305 and 350 engines. The 5 speed was available with the 305 engine and the 700R4 automatic was available with both engines.

How do you know if you have a genuine Pontiac GTA? Here is the only way that I know how you can authenticate if your car is a real GTA that came from the factory. It must list the option code Y84 on the Service Parts Identification label in your car.

There is a white label applied by the Pontiac assembly plant called the service parts identification label that is pasted on the inside wall of your console glove box. It lists all options that your car was built with from the factory. The label is glued in the console box on 1987 to 1990 Pontiac GTAs. The label is glued in the rear storage compartment on 1991 and 1992 Pontiac GTAs.

You left out the LS-2 engine.
You know, the little V-6 engine that's a 231 cubic inch motor, with a turbo on it. Wink
Well, for the 1989 model year.
Yes, I know that they only came in the 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am, but you can't forget, that the 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am is also a GTA. Very Happy

Also, Pontiac Historical Services use to have a service to get a copy of the Factory Invoice, and that would list the option as well as the SPID decal.
Another company now does it, and they can be reached thru Pontiac/GM now (sorry, but I don't remember their name right off hand).
