Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
Thanks for posting the pictures Rick. I am enjoying them.
I like your "drive 'em perfect" philosophy. After all, why not? I say to all the people who drive 100 point cars and those who trailer them and those whoe drive beaters "do whatever you want to do." If you enjoy maintaining a museum piece and enjoy the hobby that way then do that. If you want to drive a perfectly restored car then do that. It's your car. If you're a customizer then customize. Like Rick says, it's all about the people and the cars. Just enjoy both however you want to.

The interior rear sail panels, console and inside front side panels look like brand new pieces.
What kind of paint are you using to redye these interior pieces? Did you buy this from Year One or Ames?

Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
Larry I had it color matched and mixed by Albert Kemperle (The Paint Guys) in Waterbury. The paint is by PPG. I tried paint from both Ames and Classic Industries but they just didn't come close to the original color. The Paint Guys matched the color of the console. It was a perfect match.

Well I received all my new Stainless Steel Fuel, Brake, Vapor, and Transmission Cooler lines in today.
It's almost as Good as Christmas around here for me.

Sung to the tune of "Partridge in a Pear Tree"
"Five Stainless Lines
Four Body Fenders
Three Dashboard mounts
Two sail panels
And a console in a Three Speed."
Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop

Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
Well I was at the shop Friday and took a few pictures. All the panels were dry fitted and everything lined up Great. So now the welding will start. Hope to have that completed by the end of December.
Spent a little time welding in a patch on the passenger front fender.

Doug Just Dashes said it would be around six weeks before I got the console back. I'll post up a few pictures when I get it.

Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
Wow... that is the first time I have seen the car cut up like that to re weld the four fenders.
That little patch on the passenger fender is critical.
If you want a technically correct 1971 Trans Am it has to have that little patch.
Good to see you doing a little welding... but is OSHA going tell you to wear gloves and eye protection?
Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
All the body panels are welded and started to filling all the seams.
I have added about half of the sound/heat matting .
Hope to have it in primer and the rest of the matting installed by next Satruday.

Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
looks good, but one thing, the filler on the quarters.
if it were mine I would have the guy take that back off and epoxy prep the metal first.
filler is like a spunge, if and when you get a rock chip. and when it gets wet , where do you guess the water is going to go. and with nothing under the filler the sheet metal will rust.
I have know clue why some body guys put filler over bare metal. unless its fiberglass filler. it water proof.

Well Got the Body in Primer. Fitted the Doors and Trunk Lid. Drilled the Trunk and Rear Quarters and rough fitted the Rear Spoiler.
And completed installing the matting.

Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
Neil give me a New Brown REM Package Tray. So I spent a little time re-dying it. Also re-dyed a few other parts. The Bigger problem is that the new dye I had colored matched isn't a Perfect Match. So I'm going to re-dye the rest of my Interior. That should keep me busy for awhile.
All these parts are the same color. They just look different.

Re: My 71 is heading for the Shop
The problem with dyeing interior parts blue is that blue is the hardest color to match.
Obviously black is the easiest color to match. Because of the wavelengths of blue in the visible light spectrum, the human eye is most sensitive to very subtle changes or differences in shades of blue.
So it is actually better to re dye the entire interior than to try to match the shades individually, piece by piece.
